The St. Stephen's CSI Church was formed in 1867. Earlier
the Syrian Christian families in Mundiappally were
members of the Kalloopara Orthodox Church, which was
about six kilometers away from Mundiappally. There
were no churches in this area at that time. So members
of 10 houses belonging to the four families namely
Thazhikayil, Thyparampil, Thuruthumala, and Panamkulathu
approached the then CMS Missionary Re. W. Johnson
at Thiruvalla and requested him to help them in starting
a prayer hall at Mundiappally. His wholehearted support
helped our fathers to build a church in Mundiappally.
From a note by Archdeacon
Caley dated December 1904
"Mundiappally was commenced in 1867 by the Rev.
W. Johnson and has a congregation of 201 baptized
Christians. They have a small church, but neither
so large nor so good as it might have been."
The Mundiappally CSI Church was a sub station of the
Kaviyoor Pastorate till 1949. In 1949 the Mundiappally
Pastorate was formed with four sub stations namely,
Elavinal, Parady, Kalloopara and Mundukotta. The first
pastor of Mundiappally pastorate was the late Rev.
K.P. Philip.

The first church was a thatched shed in the present
Paradiyil purayidom west of the present cemetery and
PWD Road. That church was destroyed by the then influential
Hindu families. The second church was built in the
Melekunnathu Purayidom bought from the Panamkulathu
family. That was also a small thatched shed. About
that church, Archdeacon Caley in his letter to the
CMS remarked, "They have a small church but neither
so large nor so good as it might have been."
The worship was performing in that church for about
46 years.
The Third Church
The foundation stone of the third church was laid
on 18th October 1918. Twenty years were needed to
complete the church, as the financial condition of
the members was very poor. Even though this church
was a good one, it lacked space to accommodate the
increasing number of members in the congregation and
the partial damage of the 'Mukhavaram' by lightening
necessitated the construction of a bigger church
The Fourth Church
(The present Church)
The centenary of the Parish was celebrated in 1967.
A centenary Hall was built in memory of Rev. M.V.
Pothen, who served the parish as church worker and
headmaster of the local L.P. School for a long time
and pastor of the Mundiappally pastorate from 1950
- 1954. Rt. Rev. Dr. M.M. John laid the foundation
stone on 26th December 1966 and he himself dedicated
the hall on 26th December 1967.
The foundation stone for the new church was laid on
26th December 1968 during the time of Very Rev. M.K.
George. Within one year the construction was completed
and Rt. Rev. Dr. M.M. John assisted by Rt. Rev. T.S.
Joseph conducted the dedication service.
